H&H City Pizza Gluten Free Dining Review – NOW CLOSED

H&H City Pizza Gluten Free Dining

H&H City Pizza Gluten Free Dining

Sorry to report that this pizza restaurant with a gluten free option is now closed. Original review from 29 Jul 2014 follows.

I have heard such good things about H&H City Pizza, located in Chandler, Arizona.  Hearing such good things is why I started following them on Twitter.   But finally I just couldn’t wait any longer to go and check it out for myself!  Being only 9 miles away it’s nice to have a Gluten Free Pizza option so close!!  I was so excited as we drove over.

Upon arriving, I discovered it is a nice, clean, casual place.  We walked up to the counter and eagerly checked out their menu.  Prices are impressive.  As many people know… so many places charge a crazy extra amount of money to have a gluten free pizza.  H&H Pizza is not that way… it only cost us two extra bucks for a gluten free pizza!!  Now I am even more excited to try their food out!!

I gotta say the staff was amazing!!  I explained that I am gluten free and before I hoped into my normal explanation of what that means the gentleman behind the counter whipped out their gluten free menu for me and asked me if I am gluten free or Celiac.  HOLY SMOKES, that caught me off guard.  I explained I am Celiac and he started to explain to me their processes of making their own gluten free dough.  In addition, this very knowledgable guy explains to me how they keep everything separate and more details of their gluten free standards so that I felt at ease.  WOW!!  I was so impressed!!  I can’t tell you how many times I have ordered off a gluten free menu and the staff still how no idea about what it meant, why it’s needed, how it can be cross contaminated, or even that it’s a medical issue.  H&H City Pizza gets it!!  They are prepared to answer all of your questions!  Kudos to them!!!!

I can not remember if I have ever seen a gluten free wood fired pizza.  To know that I have such a gourmet experience coming was thrilling.  Their menu selections were great.  Pricing great.  The staff incredible.  Now, lets talk about their food.  I always encourage Handsome Hubby to order non-gluten free food when we are out because he deserves a break from a non needed gluten free lifestyle that he married into.  He got the Tri City Meat regular pizza and a Mediterranean Salad.  He enjoyed it and said he would get it again but also thought he might like to try their Meatball Marinara or Sausage & Pepper pizzas.  His salad was incredibly beautiful and packed with toppings!!  That alone was large enough to be a meal!!  That was one beautiful salad.   I ordered the gluten free Garlic Cheesy Bread and a gluten free pizza with extra cheese, mushrooms and pineapple… ya I know, I know, I am weird… Handsome Hubby doesn’t enjoy my pizza topping selections, so it’s great that we get our own.  Next time we go I am eager to try the Strawberry Fusion even if I have to have it chicken-less

The Garlic Cheesy Bread did not disappoint, both garlicy and cheesy!!  The Pizza was good.  I enjoyed the flavor that the wood fire oven imparts into the crust.  I did find that on both my gluten free selections, and Handsome Hubby confirmed on his gluten pizza, that the centers of the pizza were kind of “soft.”   That of course does not effect the flavor.  The sauce was great as well as their toppings.  I do wish that they had the chicken selections that are on their regular menu available on their  gluten free menu. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish that they had gluten free chicken wings.  I am a chicken wing kind of gal and I can not pass up a gluten free chicken wing!!  However, the few things that I felt were a bit lacking on their gluten free menu , leaving me feeling a bit disappointed, can be surpassed by the selection that was actually on their GF menu!!  After all, we had a tasty wood fire pizza and some really good garlic cheesy bread.  Plus, let’s face it, you can not put a price on feeling safe while dining out!!

A few extra things I want to mention about my H&H City Pizza experience….

  • H&H City Pizza is now serving ice cream.. and if I had not been so stuffed I would have wanted to indulge in some of that!!
  • They now have a second location in Casa Grande.
  • I was told during my visit that the East Valley Celiac group has been in, reviewed preparation procedures, and enjoyed their dining experience.
  • I re-heated my left overs the next day in my toaster oven at home and it was FANTASTIC.  The soft center issue I mentioned earlier is taken care of in the re-heating process and at home I get to enjoy dipping my pizza in gluten free ranch dressing, which I did not see at the restaurant as an option.
  • MOST IMPORTANT!!  (well second most important to a safe dining experience) THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING A LICENSE TO SERVE BEER AND WINE… as all of my friends, family, regular readers, co-workers, and all of the staff at the local Total Wine store know… I love enjoying a glass of wine with dinner!!  Now I did not ask if they were planning on selling gluten free beer, but with the huge gluten free following they have I wouldn’t be surprised.

I enjoyed my Gluten Free experience at H&H City Pizza and would recommend you giving them a try!!  It’s so wonderful to support the local businesses in your state and that is just another perk of dining at H&H City Pizza.  I am already looking forward to going back again… or maybe checking out their Casa Grande location!!

Gluten Free Red Enchilada Sauce Recipe II

Gluten Free Red Enchilada Sauce Recipe II

Gluten Free Red Enchilada Sauce Recipe II

I am such lucky woman… I have a husband who is a great cook and yet because he knows how much joy and pleasure I get from cooking, he allows me to do it.  Of course, any time I ask for help he is always willing to jump in and help me.  I don’t mean t sound like I am bragging (even though he deserves to be bragged about), I am just sharing this so that you know his recipes are yummy.

He shared this recipe with me for enchilada sauce.  It’s gluten free and yummy.  I was a little intimidated by it because it sounds so spicy, but it’s not at all.  the crazy thing is… that it’s VERY mild and yet has a nice flavor.  I am not a fan of spicy hot foods and he knows it so when he assured me of its mild flavor I was ready to give it a try!!  Much to my surprised the sauce itself is very mild.  It’s pretty easy as long as you have a blender and it could easily be spiced up to meet your desired kick.

Now of course, there is a quick and easy red enchilada sauce on that we shared last year (click for the Gluten Free Red Enchilada Sauce I recipe) and I still enjoy that one… but I always enjoy experimenting with new recipes so this is for a different spin.  I have always wanted to try a recipe that used the dried red chilies that are in the Hispanic section of my market because I see them in every store so I figured they must be good.  Well here is the perfect recipe to do just that!!

Gluten Free Product Review – The Bakery Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

The Bakery Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

The Bakery Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

The Bakery Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

The Bakery Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

I don’t shop in the bakery much these days because being Celiac it’s just not a friendly place for me.  In fact, its almost like torture seeing all the fresh baked sweets and breads.

However, I heard a rumor.  The kind of rumor that would make a Celiac go into the bakery torture section.  Walmart has been offering gluten free bakery items.  These items are not made on the premise so I was willing to give it a try.

I grabbed the chocolate chip cookie and by just looking at them I was excited to get home and give them a try.   As I was unpacking my groceries I started to munch on the cookies.  There were 5 large cookies for $3.28 and let me tell you they were worth every cent.  Soft and chewy!!  Yes, I said soft and chewy!!  It had a great chip to cookie ratio.  I took some to Handsome Hubby to try and after his initial shock he told me they were by far the best gluten free cookies we have purchased.

The Bakery Brand is only available at Walmart they were kind of off in the back near the sugar free bakery items.  But trust me you will want to find these cookies!!

This Product is a good recipe for people with Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity, Gluten intolerance or on a gluten free diet because none of the ingredients contain gluten.   Package is marked Gluten Free.

Easy Gluten Free Mexican Beef Recipe

Easy Gluten Free Mexican Beef Recipe

Easy Gluten Free Mexican Beef Recipe

I always feel like a rockstar when I can take leftovers from one dinner and make a completely whole new dish out of them.  Let’s face it… gluten free foods can be pricy.  To help offset that cost I like to make the most of other expensive items like the meats!!  The best way I have found is to take the leftover meat and create a new dinner with it.

Here is a perfect example.  I bought a pot roast on sale.  We had an amazing pot roast dinner that we just love (click HERE for the recipe).  Then afterwards I froze the leftovers.  I had 3/4 of a pound of roast leftover.  Last night I took it out of the fridge and made Mexican Beef with it.  This is a simple and easy recipe.  This meat can be used in tacos, enchiladas, burritos, salads, rice bowls, quesadilla recipes.. it’s a nice filling that is easy to use.  Two completely opposite dinners off of the same piece of meat… pretty cool.

Now I just have to find a way to talk my Handsome Husband into allowing me to transfer the savings that we saved from cooking with leftovers into another new idea I like to call… a monthly shoe budget!!

That is going to be much hard than it is to make this Mexican Beef for sure!!
