H&H City Pizza Gluten Free Dining Review – NOW CLOSED

H&H City Pizza Gluten Free Dining

Sorry to report that this pizza restaurant with a gluten free option is now closed. Original review from 29 Jul 2014 follows.

I have heard such good things about H&H City Pizza, located in Chandler, Arizona.  Hearing such good things is why I started following them on Twitter.   But finally I just couldn’t wait any longer to go and check it out for myself!  Being only 9 miles away it’s nice to have a Gluten Free Pizza option so close!!  I was so excited as we drove over.

Upon arriving, I discovered it is a nice, clean, casual place.  We walked up to the counter and eagerly checked out their menu.  Prices are impressive.  As many people know… so many places charge a crazy extra amount of money to have a gluten free pizza.  H&H Pizza is not that way… it only cost us two extra bucks for a gluten free pizza!!  Now I am even more excited to try their food out!!

I gotta say the staff was amazing!!  I explained that I am gluten free and before I hoped into my normal explanation of what that means the gentleman behind the counter whipped out their gluten free menu for me and asked me if I am gluten free or Celiac.  HOLY SMOKES, that caught me off guard.  I explained I am Celiac and he started to explain to me their processes of making their own gluten free dough.  In addition, this very knowledgable guy explains to me how they keep everything separate and more details of their gluten free standards so that I felt at ease.  WOW!!  I was so impressed!!  I can’t tell you how many times I have ordered off a gluten free menu and the staff still how no idea about what it meant, why it’s needed, how it can be cross contaminated, or even that it’s a medical issue.  H&H City Pizza gets it!!  They are prepared to answer all of your questions!  Kudos to them!!!!

I can not remember if I have ever seen a gluten free wood fired pizza.  To know that I have such a gourmet experience coming was thrilling.  Their menu selections were great.  Pricing great.  The staff incredible.  Now, lets talk about their food.  I always encourage Handsome Hubby to order non-gluten free food when we are out because he deserves a break from a non needed gluten free lifestyle that he married into.  He got the Tri City Meat regular pizza and a Mediterranean Salad.  He enjoyed it and said he would get it again but also thought he might like to try their Meatball Marinara or Sausage & Pepper pizzas.  His salad was incredibly beautiful and packed with toppings!!  That alone was large enough to be a meal!!  That was one beautiful salad.   I ordered the gluten free Garlic Cheesy Bread and a gluten free pizza with extra cheese, mushrooms and pineapple… ya I know, I know, I am weird… Handsome Hubby doesn’t enjoy my pizza topping selections, so it’s great that we get our own.  Next time we go I am eager to try the Strawberry Fusion even if I have to have it chicken-less

The Garlic Cheesy Bread did not disappoint, both garlicy and cheesy!!  The Pizza was good.  I enjoyed the flavor that the wood fire oven imparts into the crust.  I did find that on both my gluten free selections, and Handsome Hubby confirmed on his gluten pizza, that the centers of the pizza were kind of “soft.”   That of course does not effect the flavor.  The sauce was great as well as their toppings.  I do wish that they had the chicken selections that are on their regular menu available on their  gluten free menu. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish that they had gluten free chicken wings.  I am a chicken wing kind of gal and I can not pass up a gluten free chicken wing!!  However, the few things that I felt were a bit lacking on their gluten free menu , leaving me feeling a bit disappointed, can be surpassed by the selection that was actually on their GF menu!!  After all, we had a tasty wood fire pizza and some really good garlic cheesy bread.  Plus, let’s face it, you can not put a price on feeling safe while dining out!!

A few extra things I want to mention about my H&H City Pizza experience….

  • H&H City Pizza is now serving ice cream.. and if I had not been so stuffed I would have wanted to indulge in some of that!!
  • They now have a second location in Casa Grande.
  • I was told during my visit that the East Valley Celiac group has been in, reviewed preparation procedures, and enjoyed their dining experience.
  • I re-heated my left overs the next day in my toaster oven at home and it was FANTASTIC.  The soft center issue I mentioned earlier is taken care of in the re-heating process and at home I get to enjoy dipping my pizza in gluten free ranch dressing, which I did not see at the restaurant as an option.
  • MOST IMPORTANT!!  (well second most important to a safe dining experience) THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING A LICENSE TO SERVE BEER AND WINE… as all of my friends, family, regular readers, co-workers, and all of the staff at the local Total Wine store know… I love enjoying a glass of wine with dinner!!  Now I did not ask if they were planning on selling gluten free beer, but with the huge gluten free following they have I wouldn’t be surprised.

I enjoyed my Gluten Free experience at H&H City Pizza and would recommend you giving them a try!!  It’s so wonderful to support the local businesses in your state and that is just another perk of dining at H&H City Pizza.  I am already looking forward to going back again… or maybe checking out their Casa Grande location!!

Please contact them or start following them today!!

Gluten Free Dining Review – Pizza Hut Gluten Free Pizza

Gluten Free Dining Review - Pizza Hut Gluten Free Pizza

Gluten Free Dining Review – Pizza Hut Gluten Free Pizza

Well the day finally arrived.  The much anticipated release of the new gluten free pizza by Pizza Hut.  The beautiful partnership of Pizza Hut and Udi’s has been something that many Celiac’s have dreamed of.

As soon as I got off from working my “day job” Handsome hubby and I hit the road and drove the 24 minute drive to the closest Pizza Hut that had the gluten free pizza.  As we got closer and closer I got more and more excited.  We discussed our dining options on the way there.  Although much more rare these days, we were really hoping this is one of the dine in locations because making that 24 minute drive back with hot pizzas just didn’t seem like a fun thing to do.  It was either that or grab some soda and find a park and have an impromptu pizza picnic this overcast, breezy and lightly sprinkling day (a rarity in AZ).   As we pulled up into the parking lot I was almost giddy with excitement…. thankfully this particular location had a dine in option!!  JACKPOT!!

We ordered our dinners and enjoyed the atmosphere of the Pizza Hut, caught some news blurbs on the TVs, and chatted about our work days as we waited for the pizza to be made.  The manager, over the phone went over the procedures with me and I have been reading a lot on the Internet regarding Pizza Hut’s gluten free certification (although I did forget to inquire about whether or not it was a dine in location).  After my chat with the manager I felt very comfortable and excited to try their pizza.  It was really nice to eat out because that is not something that we do often.  AND this particular location had beer and wine for sale.  I doubt it would be gluten free beer but it’s nice to know that wine was an option!!

The pizza was delivered to the table in box to help reduce cross contamination for me and also with it’s own serving spatular.  I will admit to you, if you keep it just between us, I didn’t need my own spatula.  I ate the pizza right out of the box.  I know Ms. Manners or Emily Post would have had a cow, but if you are old enough to know who they are then you know there is no hope for me, and if you don’t know who they are then you need to Google it.

I know Udi’s and I know that I enjoy their crust.  After my conversation with the manager, I feel comfortable with Pizza Hut’s gluten free processes and staff training.  And after my first slice I must say that my pizza adventure was a success.  It tasted great and reasonably priced at $9.99.  I enjoyed it.  Although I did forget to sneak in some gluten free ranch dressing for dipping.

Now you know me and I have my opinions to share… I had a hard time finding a Pizza Hut location that carried this gluten free pizza.  I have included the link below that I just found.  However I called 5 different locations near my home and none of them had any clue what I was talking about.  I found that incredibly frustrating and from what I am reading on the Internet I am not the only person experiencing that issue.   My main complaint is that limited locations is just not convenient.  Until they expand their availability I won’t be able to have this very often.  Yes, I know the pizza tasted great and I REALLY enjoyed it but 24 minute drive in each direction through  a newly developing city that is experiencing much traffic and road construction is just not top of my list.  I have a Pizza Hut delivery/carryout location 1.2 miles from my home and I would love to be able to swing by there and grab one.  The thought of actually having one delivered is even better!!

Now for my “wish list”…  The collaboration between Udi’s and Pizza Hut is a success and I can’t wait for you to try their outstanding product.  I also hope that this means that Udi’s will collaborate with other restaurants to do the same thing in other formats like in sub shops or breakfast drive thrus.    I hope that Pizza Hut will have great success with this product and expand their line… I can imagine how good some wings would be with my pizza!! (Hint, Hint!)

What it  boils down to is that I am Celiac and I enjoyed my dining experience was had no ill effects from doing so.  I hope you give it a try… remember the more support they get the more likely they will expand the menu and encourage other companies to follow their lead.  So even if it means that you have to drive a bit to support this venture, I would highly encourage you to do so!!  This is definitely a win for the Celiac and Gluten Free Community!!

I have never eaten at Papa Murphy’s… that was until Udi’s and Papa Murphy’s decided to collaborate on a gluten free pizza offering.  I ordered my favorite pizza which is kinda boring but I love cheese pizza with extra cheese.
We baked it up at home per the instructions.  I found that the crust was a little soft in the middle but overall tasty.  The next day, for lunch, I re-heated the pizza in a little toaster oven and it made the bottom crust much crispier and I enjoyed it more the second day.

Being a Celiac it is always concerning about eating out anywhere.  I did NOT get sick and had no medical issues from eating the pizza.  I enjoyed the Papa Murphy’s / Udi’s pizza and had a good experience overall.
Please keep in mind that not everybody is onboard with Udi’s crust at Papa Murphy’s.  I highly recommend that you contact your local Papa Murphy’s and discuss your questions and concerns with them.  Then you can make your own educated choice.

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona, Gluten Free Dining Review – Part Two

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona, Gluten Free Dining Review – Part Two

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona, Gluten Free Dining Review - roast beef sandwich

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona, Gluten Free Dining Review – roast beef sandwich

Recently I told you about a fantastic place in Mesa Arizona called Cafe 8.  I went there and raided their dessert selection like a pirate grabbing booty.  Well, ummm, considering I am the one who ate alllllllll those desserts from that article I probably don’t want to think about booty right now I might get a little blue.  Big Blue Bootie… let’s not even go there.

Anyway, if you want to learn about our first encounter with Cafe8 Click HERE for the link.

As I mentioned in that article, after having such a wonderful experience with their baked goods, I couldn’t  wait to get back and try their dining menu.  As we drove down there, I spent the entire time on my phone looking at the menu as Handsome Hubby drove.  Then upon arrival they seated us and I studied their menu again.  The problem is there is so much I want to try and just not enough stomach to eat everything.

It was early afternoon so we finally decided that Handsome Hubby would have the roast beef sandwich and I would have a meatball sub, both having the soup of the day and a promise to come back soon so that we could try more items.

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona, Gluten Free Dining Review – tomato basil soup

The soup of the day was an amazing Tomato Basil.  Rich and hearty.  Yet it did not taste like there was any cream so it might have been dairy free as well!!  My meatball sub was amazing.  Crusty Italian bread with flavorful, yet not overpowering, meatballs.  Don’t even get me started on the melted cheese!!  When being served my eyeballs almost popped out because it looked so amazing!!  Handsome Hubby’s roast beef sandwich… oh where to begin?!?!?!  We read the menu and it sounded great BUT we had no idea what we were in for.  It came out and surprised us right away.  We were expecting gluten free lunch meat roast beef.  NO SIR!  This is the real deal.  This was actual roasted meat, NOT cold cuts / lunch meat.  We quickly swapped half of our sandwiches to each other and both bit into our first bite.  We love roast beef sandwiches but this was BEYOND any I have had.  I expected the beef to be a bit tough but tasty.. you know, where as you bite it kind of pulls out of the sandwich.. not that it’s bad, but that is just what roast beef does.  Well not at Cafe 8 it doesn’t!!  As we oood and awwwd over the roast beef the Chef / Owner let us know that he actually uses prime rib.  I have never ever ever had such a wonderful roast beef sandwich, even when I have made it myself.

Basically lunch at Cafe 8 ROCKED!!  LOVED IT!!  Cant wait to go back and try more stuff.

Also important to let you know…. they will be having their later “winter” hours soon and they will be adding more items onto their menu.  However, most importantly… they do not serve wine but you can bring your own… with NO CORKING FEE!!  That’s right… I said no corking fee.  I am so excited about going back for dinner soon and yet, I am bringing my friend Red… red wine that is.

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona

I heard about Cafe 8 on a Friday night at about 8 pm.  I was there waiting for the doors to open on Saturday morning at 8 am.   One of my Celiac food testers for the website told me that there is a place in Mesa that serves an large gluten free menu AND they have a entire selection of gluten free desserts.  I got the name and the cross streets and that is how the adventure starts.

Handsome Hubby is on a business trip.  He has to travel a few times a year to deal with IT and computer things that are WAYYYYYYYYYY over my head.  But when he is gone I try to load up my days with lots of gluten free dining and creating recipes so that it makes the days go by faster till he gets home.  So the news about Cafe8 could not have come at a better time.  I am eager to try something new!!

The next morning I am on the road and excited to be going.  I have one goal.  To try as much as I can from their bakery / dessert selections.  I was told the previous night that only on Saturdays do they make gluten free donuts.  So I am a woman on a mission!!

As I drove over there I get excited but also a little anxious cause I have no idea what I am walking into and I plan on taking everything to go.  I guess you could say I am worried that I am going to drop a small fortune, then get home and not like anything.  Most Celiac’s know what I am talking about… just because someone is selling something gluten free doesn’t mean it’s good.  So I got there a few minutes before they opened and as I sat in my car I sat and daydreamed of over the top delicious gluten free donuts.

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona

Upon entering the first thing my eyes set themselves on is the bakery case.  I hightail myself over and it’s probably a good thing that there was nobody in front of me cause I might have ran them over.  My eyes pop out when I see a huge selection.  I explained it was my first visit and that I was going to get several items to go.  The lady working that morning was incredibly friendly and answered all of my gluten free questions.  They do not make ANYTHING with regular flour on the premises. Only gluten free flour is use in their baking.  They do sell some things that are not gluten free if you choose to order off of that menu but they have a separate area for anything that isn’t gluten free.    I spoke to the kind lady for about 15 minutes and learned that she too is Celiac and we had a lovely discussion of food safety.  Meanwhile she was filling my order that sounded like this…  “oh may I have one of those, and that thing over there with the strawberries,… oh ya one of those please, and whatever kind of donuts you have I would like one of each please, and one of those and one of those and one of those.”

Below is a list of the items I purchase and a brief review of each item.

Key Lime Pie… AMAZING

Chocolate Pie… It was ok, but the texture of the chocolate was fantastic.

Chocolate Covered Donut.  Yum

Crumb Covered Donuts.  AMAZING

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona

Cafe 8, Mesa Arizona

Strawberry Shortcake REALLY REALLY REALLY good.  The cake texture was spot on.  The cream and strawberries were wonderful but the big part of this dessert is the cake and they nailed it!!

They mix it up all the time and serve a wide selection of treats but they are not listed on their menu so that can see what they have but that was part of the excitement for me.  You can always call in advance to find out what they are serving that day.. and I was told they take orders for donuts because even if you need just a few they will make sure they set them aside for you because rumor has it the donuts go CRAZY fast!!

Not only was the staff friendly and knowledgeable (which is something that most places can’t say)  but the desserts were incredible.  They have a full menu and I can’t wait to go back and try more of their food.  Right now they are still on Arizona Summer Hours, so pretty soon they will be opened later so you have to call them and check out what’s a good time to go.  But trust me… it’s totally worth the trip!!

Heads up!!  If you are dairy free, vegan or vegetarian speak to your server because they have a great selection of items for you as well.

Handsome Hubby and I are scheduling a date night there as soon as he returns to try some of their gluten free menu very soon, so keep posted to hear all about that!  Until then, hurry up and give them a try!!  You are going to enjoy this for sure!!!
