Gluten Free Product Review – McCormick Smokey Applewood Grill Makes Marinade
Ever since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease I have avoided marinades. I find that sometimes the most basic seasoning can be wonderful. However, recently I saw a product at my local grocer that caught my eye. McCormick’s Smokey Applewood Grill Mates Marinade.
This marinade comes in a convenient envelope and the instructions are pretty straight forward and I searched the packaged for a “gluten free” but was not able to find it. I read the ingredients and it looked pretty straightforward and yet still no “gluten free” markings. I am not going to lie, I was really disappointed in that. I prefer to have packages marked gluten free for myself. Even more important, I really prefer to do product reviews of products that are marked gluten free.

Gluten Free Product Review – McCormick Smokey Applewood Grill Makes Marinade
But there was just something inside of myself screaming out that I wanted to try THIS product. So I contacted McCormick and this was their response….
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate your interest in our Grill Mates Smoky Applewood Seasoning Mix and welcome the opportunity to be of assistance to you.
Since the late 1990’s, McCormick has used “Plain English” allergen labeling to communicate our product ingredients. Gluten is listed as “wheat” or “barley” in our ingredient statements. This labeling policy adheres to the FDA regulations that were implemented as of January 1, 2006.
If a product does not have an ingredient statement, it is a pure spice or herb with nothing added and contains no added glutens. In addition, the alcohol in all of our retail extracts is not from grain and is gluten free. Because we are constantly improving our products, we do not offer a list of our products that do not currently contain glutens. We encourage you to read the ingredient statement on your package at the time of purchase to ensure accurate, up to date information.
In addition, we follow good manufacturing practices at our plants. Our employees are trained in the importance of correct labeling and the necessity of performing thorough equipment wash-downs to eliminate cross-contact of ingredients.
Although we cannot guarantee our products to be 100% free of allergens not listed on the label, we want you to know that we take allergen concerns seriously and have taken extra precautions to eliminate the possibility of mislabeling or cross-contact.
So of course, as with any gluten free food, we need to decide what amount of labeling and processing is good for our own food choices.
I am grateful for their detailed and quick response. I did make this product per the package instructions, except for the fact that I only had Balsamic Vinegar that day, so I did substitute that. Both Handsome Hubby and I adored the results of this marinade. We made it one day while we were out in our RV / Motorhome and while he was grilling the pork chops, a neighbor friend of our was walking by and literally stopped to tell Handsome Hubby that those chops looked fantastic and smelled even better!! He was right, they were fantastic and although I tend to avoid marinades I am excited to share this experience with you.
As I mentioned I prefer to do product reviews with products that are marked gluten free, however, I wanted to let you know about a product that I enjoyed and the great info from the manufacturer!!
I was NOT provided with product or financial support for this product review. The opinions stated here are simply my own.
